Are you Developing Dropped Names?

Numbers do not lie – domain drop system sales are at an all time high and do not seem to be budging.  Buying domains from drop system is a great way to find a good deal on a great domain name whether you are a reseller or end user.

Here are the categories I break dropped domains into:

• Premium Drops
  • Obvious value behind the domain name itself.  Regardless of its previous development state – these names will always fetch highest values.
• Traffic Drops
  • The unsung hero of daily drops.  People analyze huge amounts of data to discern whether a domain name that is about to drop had previous development done to it and any existing traffic.  Much of this traffic comes from backlinks – which is the whole reason for this post.
• Useless Drops
  • Isn’t it funny some of the stuff people register?!  I know I am victim to a few late night registrations that make me wonder what I was thinking come time to renew.  These names have little or no value.

Which Drop Names Should be Developed?

Obviously, we believe that all premium domains need to be developed – it is why we are here after all!  I won’t get too deep into this.

Traffic drops however are an interesting case that deserve some explanation.

Chances are if a domain was developed and is dropping, it has established backlinks to it.  The previous mentality here was to purchase the domain . . . blackhole all traffic to the site to a parking page and suck it till it runs dry.  The problem I have with this is that . . . it will run dry.

The good news is – it doesn’t have to run dry.

Search Engine Safe Redirects

There are numerous ways to redirect web pages, however only a few methods that redirect web pages safely so that the search engine gods do not frown upon you.  301 and 302 Redirects basically alert the search engine spiders and let them know that whatever was here – has moved somewhere else.  So if you bought domainabc.com off of namejet.com and it had 300 links pointed to domainabc.com/some-page.html – we can simply let the search engines know that domainabc.com/some-page.html is now located at domainabc.com/new-page.html without having to contact all of the link owners and ask them to change.  Effectively, you just created 300 targeted links to a fresh page on domainabc.com/new-page.html – this is priceless.

Backlinks are the determining factor on why your site, versus your competitor should be shown first.  The more targeted backlinks you have – the better you will perform.

Why This Works?

I love the ability to buy a domain with tons of backlinks.  Link building is a time consuming processs – however this eliminates that cost of time and production.  Best of all – instead of waiting for your new backlinks to drop off because they are now pointing to a parking page – you have no worries and can continue operating a full speed.  The backlinks stay valuable and your site continues to flourish.

Here is a little tip for current site owners:  If you are looking for a push ahead in the link building game – it can be effective to purchase a domain name with backlinks and have them 301 or 302 to your main site.  Think of it as cannibalizing a domain for its linking power.
